4th of July Jello Recipe (1)

This 4th of July Jello is the perfect patriotic treat this summer! The whole thing will show the patriotic colors and be the hit of the party.

We love to add it along with other great food for family BBQs or potlucks in the Summer! This blue layer and white layer jello is a staple for all of the American patriotic holidays. Bring this red, white, and blue dessert to any July party or even to Memorial Day. The festive red, white, and blue colors within the jello are sure to be the hit of the party.

4th of July traditions are my favorite and this 4th of July Jello is a fun and festive treat to help you cool down on a hot summer day! There is nothing better than a fun dessert to add as a side dish to showcase patriotic colors that say, “Happy 4th of July”!

Every 4th of July, we have a big BBQ at our parent’s house and enjoy being together.

This fun jello snack always shows up at our 4th of July dinner and the kids LOVE it. One of the coolest things about this dessert is that the different colors can be whatever flavors you choose. This patriotic recipe must be red, white, and blue but each layer can be made with packets of unflavored gelatin which can then be flavored accordingly.

For the festive red layer, we like to use strawberry jello or raspberry hello. The next layer is white jello which we usually add a condensed milk mixture to, to give it flavor. And the bottom layer is the blue layer which is delicious when fresh blueberries are added.

(Hot tip: If you want to make jello cups that pop, try using a star cookie cutter for each jello slice!)

I add 1/2 pkg of Knox to each of the colors or use 1 1/2 cups of water in each color instead. Also make sure condensed milk mixture is completely cooled before mixing into colors

  3. Kathleen Bateman says:

Yours looks amazing! I think I let the sweetened condensed milk gelatin mixture cool too long, an hour. It started to set and was more like a pudding than a liquid. I tried layering/scattering my Jello cubes to mix color and poured the sweetened condensed milk mixture, but my last 1/4 of Jello cubes didn’t sink. I didn’t get the smooth top but a jagged surface. Could I achieve the smooth top by flipping it out of the 9x13 and allowing the smooth bottom to be the top? Should I have sprayed the 9x13 with a nonstick spray first? It’s in the fridge for the final set. I’m afraid if I try to flip it then it might fall apart. It looks colorful and I’m sure it’ll win points with the kids, but I don’t have tons of Jello experience besides just pouring it into cups.

  4. Barbara Neel says:

Do you know how long this can be kept refrigerated?

  5. Teri Livingston says:

This recipe calls for 2 (1 ounce) packages of Knox gelatin. I could only find 1-ounce boxes that had 4 (0.25 ounce) packets in each one. I bought two boxes because that is equivalent to 2 ounces. As I was opening each of the 8 (0.25 ounce) packets into the cold water I had a feeling it was too much but decided to follow the recipe. Needless to say, it set up so hard it was like rubber!! Such a pretty dessert but should I have only used two of the 0.25 ounce packets? Or any other suggestions on why it would have set up so hard?

  6. Laura says:

I also bought 2 boxes of Knox gelatin containing 8-0.25 oz. packets for a total of 2 oz. and was wondering the same thing. It seemed like a lot. Thankfully I checked the site again to see if there were any comments about this before I made it. I followed your advice and used two 0.25 oz. packets (for a total of 0.5 oz.) and it came out perfectly. Teri, thank you for your comment!

I just made the milk mixture and was ready to go to the store for more Gelatin. Good thing I read the comments!!

  8. Nicole says:

Ran into this same issue! Thanks for commenting! I was questioning if its just 2 packets or a full 2 oz. I didn't want it to fail! Good to know I made the right decision.

  9. L. Kellis says:

Thank you so much! I was just wondering this too!

  10. Judy Hurst says:

I thought this was a great idea and it looked so pretty. BUT, what is the correct amount of unflavored gelatin? Recipe said 2 1-ounce packets. I also bought 2 boxes with 4 .-25 oz and used it all — result was ok, but rubbery. Please indicate if,you, meant just 2 -.25 packets or a full 2 ounces. Thank you!

  11. Momma Cyd says:

The Knox unflavored gelatin comes in .25 ounce packets. You need 2 of them for this recipe. These Jello squares are a little firmer than regular jello. They are so fun for the 4th of July and summer celebrations. Have a great week.
